Avalokitesvara, the 'compassionate one', is presented here as Chintamani Lokesvara, the lord of wealth, who seeks to rid the world of poverty. In this painting, he holds in his left hand the branch of the wish-fulfilling tree Kalpabrikshya, while the right hand gift jewels to the old man.The deity's compassion is represented by the female form that is seen handing wealth to a chubby Yakshya. This painting refers back to the myth that Lokesvara, who was born to a merchant family in Kashi, grew to be kind and generous and remained charitable in old age. Eventually, his wealth and property ran out. But ever-determined to achieve his goal of alleviating poverty, the legend says he crossed rugged terrains and fought evil spirits to acquire the Kalpabrikshya, so that every kind of suffering and poverty of all the living creatures, would be eliminated. The grandeur of the minutely decorated Kalpabrikshya is worth studying, for it provides insights into the artist's attention to fine and evocative detail. This painting by the artist Lok Chitrakar tried to depict in details of the subtle elements and deities. This is a unique "paubha" painting in the fusion of several tradition of painting.
