Sambar is one of the most important deities of the Vajrayan pantheon of Nepal and Tibet. Here, he is shown with his consort Vajrabarahi. Their union, a manifestation of the Buddha's enlightenment, captures the coming together of wisdom and compassion leading to ultimate bliss. The figures are portrayed against a background of flaming red which defines the fiery of wisdom, with the pattern that is typical of the Valley's Paubha style. The male Sambar embodies compassion and the female Vajrabarahi the transcendental wisdom. Sambar wears a tiger skin and jeweled bone ornaments. The lack of clothing on the deities expresses liberation from the mind's depravation. The crowns both wore are rimmed with five skulls, conveying their possession of all five kinds of wisdom. Sambar has four (yellow, blue, green, red) faces with three eyes, representation the four directions. His six pair of hands indicate compassion and wisdom, life and death, creativity and security. The 'chakra' refers to the wheel of creation that continues to turn through the unison.
